 Driver Crisis in Road Transport

Road transport, which is preferred among the transportation modes in our country and where 20% of foreign trade takes place, is experiencing a driver crisis today.

In today's world, the global problem of finding drivers has increased with the pandemic period. Before Covid 19, the main reasons for this situation were to find a reliable, willing or competent driver. Of course, it could be added that the response to driver visa applications was negative or late positive. Nowadays, the difficulty of finding drivers for companies has reached a different dimension. Due to the pandemic, especially in the first months, there were peaks in terms of quarantine practices, drivers' desire to be cautious, and driver shortage after the consulates were closed less or completely. As a matter of fact, according to Und data, exports by road had decreased in the first months of the pandemic.
It is also possible that road transport, which has an important place in the economy of our country in terms of both exports and employment, may encounter these problems more frequently in the future. Leading companies in road transport such as Und are also continuing to work on this issue. However, it can be said that under current conditions, being a driver is not attractive to young people, despite a good income average in the country. In the future, it is not known that a permanent solution will be found to this problem with new technologies in the field of transportation, so important steps should be taken for this problem in the near future.
