From Used Cooking Oil to Sustainable Aviation Fuel: A Green Transformation in Air Freight

As efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation and logistics sectors accelerate, converting waste into sustainable fuels is becoming an increasingly important component of next-generation logistics practices. In this context, EVA Air, AIT Worldwide Logistics, and Microsoft have launched a two-year program to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from used cooking oil in air freight operations.

 

The SAF used in the program will be produced in Taiwan from used cooking oil. The project is expected to reduce approximately 15,000 tons of CO₂ emissions across Microsoft's supply chain during its first year. According to the companies, the fuel can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80% compared with conventional jet fuel, highlighting its potential contribution to more sustainable aviation.

 

The initiative demonstrates that sustainability in logistics requires not only the optimization of transportation processes but also a transformation in the energy sources used throughout supply chains. The wider adoption of SAF in air cargo could provide significant opportunities to reduce carbon footprints, promote circular economy practices, and develop more environmentally responsible supply chains.

 

Transforming used cooking oil into a higher-value energy resource also highlights the growing importance of resource efficiency and circularity in the future of sustainable logistics.
