Practice of Weighing Passengers Before Boarding

Passengers travelling with Korean Airlines will have to weigh themselves before boarding in the coming weeks.

According to South Korean media, passengers travelling with Korean Airlines will be required to weigh themselves before boarding in the coming weeks. This step has been taken to help authorities in Seoul update aircraft weight and balance standards. From 28 August to 6 September, weigh stations will be set up at Seoul's Gimpo Airport for domestic passengers and from 8 to 19 September at Incheon Airport for international passengers. Airline officials stated that the weight and hand luggage of each passenger will be recorded, and this data will be transmitted to the country's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and used. The Ministry will use the data to calculate the average weight of a typical passenger, and this information will be used to determine seat arrangements and the amount of extra fuel the aircraft must carry. Airline staff stressed that overweight passengers will not have to pay extra fees and that all data collected will be anonymised.
