BEING an IGU STUDENT

My name is Ahmet Emre Gülbahar, and I am a third-year student in the English Business Administration Department. I would like to briefly talk about my university life and my department.

This is my fourth year at the university and my third year in my department. I started my education at Istanbul Gelisim University in 2021, where I spent my first year in the preparatory English program. Unfortunately, during my preparatory year, the effects of the pandemic were still continuing in our country. For this reason, part of my preparatory education was face-to-face and part of it was conducted online. During that year, I improved my English, which I already had a basic foundation in, and made new friends.

The year 2022 was a period when I truly began to feel like a university student. The pandemic restrictions were lifted, and with the start of my departmental courses, I developed a clearer perspective on how I wanted to shape my future. While the relationships I built with my classmates helped me become more social, the voluntary summer internships I have been doing for the past two years have provided me with valuable experience in the professional field.

I would also like to give some information about the department I am studying in. First of all, I would like to explain why I chose the English Business Administration Department. Honestly, I am one of those people who cannot fit themselves into a single, clear professional profile. When I asked myself during high school where I wanted to be in 7–8 years, my answer was: “a career path where I can earn a salary that allows me to live comfortably in any metropolitan city in the world and advance step by step to a managerial position.” For this reason, I chose the Business Administration Department, which offers opportunities to work in many different sectors.

A graduate of business administration can work in fields such as economics, finance, marketing, trade, accounting, sales, and similar areas according to their abilities and interests. This diversity has a very positive impact on employment opportunities. As for the answer to the question “Why English Business Administration?”, English is a mandatory language used worldwide, especially in foreign trade, import, and export sectors. Studying the department in English opens the door to potential job opportunities abroad. Therefore, I recommend studying in an English-taught department especially English Business Administration to friends who wish to live and work abroad.

As I conclude this piece, I would first like to sincerely thank Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çağla Tuğberk Arıker, the Head of the Department, and Res. Asst. Melih Yıldız for their efforts and support. I would also like to express my respect and gratitude to all my professors and friends who have supported me throughout my educational life.
