The UN Special envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, said on Friday that the UN Security Council needs to take urgent action to address the increasing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. She gave appalling figures of the number of the people who have been killed, detained, tortured and disappeared without any trace since the army illegitimate seized power in a coup five months ago. While pointing out the lack of unity among the permanent members of the Security Council over Myanmar, Burgener stressed that she is in close contact with ambassadors from many countries to try to find a solution to the Myanmar crisis. The resolution adopted recently by the UN General Assembly condemning the human rights abuses in the country is a good step in that direction but clearly not enough.
