Message from Head of Department

Dear students,

English Language and Literature Programme, with its diverse and rich curriculum and course contents and student-centred education, aims not only to encourage students to explore English language and English literature by performing an in-depth analysis of various novels, poems, plays, short stories, and theoretical texts but also to encourage students to pursue interdisciplinary studies. This programme is not just a simple foreign language programme or a programme simply established with the sole purpose of providing job opportunities after graduation. Instead of mastering English language mechanically, the students will analyse and explore English literature, world literatures, Greek Mythology, Western philosophy and culture by putting under scrutiny a variety of literary works so that they can achieve a better understanding of themselves and other cultures as well as different ideas and perspectives. It is almost impossible to exist in a world which has become a sort of “global village” if we limit ourselves to a single culture, perspective, and a way of living. We have to master English language in order to understand different cultures. What distinguishes this programme from others is that it trains students for today’s multinational and multicultural world. In the future, mastering English language, only by itself, will not be enough to achieve success. Rather, those who can understand and touch people via language will achieve success, and this can happen only through literature. Thus, I invite you all to explore and understand this multinational and multicultural world together.
