Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarp Bağcan Presented a Paper at the INSIGHT 2026 Conference
Hosted by the Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences, the “INSIGHT 2026: International Conference on Information Systems and Smart Technologies” was held on August 19–20, 2026, at the IGU Mehmet Akif Ersoy Conference Hall.
Organized in collaboration with Istanbul Gelisim University, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universitas Brawijaya, BINUS University, and Stockholm University, the conference brought together representatives from academia and the industry with a focus on information systems, artificial intelligence technologies, and sustainable development.
Within the scope of the event, our department faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarp Bağcan presented his paper titled “The Summary Trap: AI-Generated News Summaries, Context Compression, and Public Trust in Intelligent Information Systems.”
The Summary Trap in the Era of AI and Information Ecosystems
In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarp Bağcan addressed the impact of news and information summaries generated by AI-driven algorithms on information circulation and individual perception. He explained how mechanisms such as omission, semantic flattening, and decontextualization—which emerge during automated summarization processes—transform the perception of reality. Furthermore, he underscored the critical importance of accessing accurate information and developing critical filtering skills against the risk of disinformation, while sharing actionable tactics and institutional framework recommendations to avoid information assimilation and summarization traps.
