The Role of Tour Guiding: Enriching Gaziantep’s Cultural Narrative Through Antep Embroidery

As one of Türkiye’s leading destinations for culture and gastronomy, Gaziantep offers a rich narrative space for tour guiding through its diverse heritage elements. The inclusion of Antep embroidery in the UNESCO list adds a new cultural layer, further strengthening the city’s tourism value.

While Gaziantep has long been known for its cuisine, traditional crafts and local production practices are increasingly becoming part of guided tour narratives. The recognition of Antep embroidery enhances this narrative, allowing the city to present itself not only through gastronomy but also through its broader cultural identity.

From a tour guiding perspective, this development enriches interpretive content. Guides can use Antep embroidery to explain both traditional craftsmanship and its place within the region’s cultural memory and daily life. This creates opportunities to move beyond standard city tours and offer more meaningful, in-depth experiences to visitors.

In addition, the fact that Antep embroidery is still practiced in local workshops enables the inclusion of experiential elements in tour programs. Observing the production process on-site allows visitors to engage more directly with the destination and develop a stronger connection to its culture.

In this context, the recognition of Antep embroidery by UNESCO stands out as a significant development for tour guiding in Gaziantep. This newly recognized cultural asset not only broadens the destination’s diversity but also enhances the depth and quality of the visitor experience.
