Türkiye’s museums and archaeological heritage sites welcomed more than 33 million visitors in 2025, reaffirming the country’s strong position in global cultural tourism. The impressive figures reflect growing international and domestic interest in Türkiye’s historical assets and underline the expanding role of heritage-based travel experiences.
According to official statements by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the rise in visitor numbers demonstrates the success of ongoing restoration projects, improved site management and enhanced visitor services. Museums and archaeological sites are not only cultural attractions but also key pillars of sustainable tourism development and educational engagement.
Among the most visited destinations, Ephesus led the list with approximately 2.5 million visitors. The UNESCO-listed Pamukkale-Hierapolis followed closely, attracting both culture and wellness-oriented travelers. In Cappadocia, the Göreme Open-Air Museum and Zelve-Paşabağları continued to draw significant attention thanks to their unique rock-cut architecture and landscape heritage. In Istanbul, the iconic Galata Tower remained one of the most visited urban heritage landmarks.
For tourism guiding professionals, these figures highlight an important strategic opportunity. Increasing visitor flows to cultural heritage sites demand highly qualified tourist guides who can interpret historical narratives, contextualize archaeological findings and deliver meaningful visitor experiences. As experiential and storytelling-based tourism grows in importance, professional tour guides play a central role in transforming statistical growth into high-quality cultural engagement.
The continued popularity of museums and heritage sites also supports destination marketing strategies that emphasize authenticity, cultural continuity and immersive visitor experiences. For tour operators and certified tourist guides, developing specialized thematic tours — such as archaeology-focused itineraries, UNESCO heritage routes or experiential history tours — can further enhance visitor satisfaction and repeat visitation.
