Advancing Sustainability: Harnessing the Synergy in Gender Diversity through Increased Female Participation

The globe is equipped with diverse strengths from both male and female perspectives. Since it is impossible for an eagle to soar with one wing, relying on a single perspective will limit progress towards global sustainability. As social, economic, and environmental challenges persist globally, it is crucial to eliminate gaps in human development because when talents and perspectives are combined, they can produce better solutions. Therefore, harnessing the synergy of gender diversity is an essential roadmap to accelerate the pace of sustainability. This can be achieved by closing the gender gap through increased women's participation, driving better innovation and providing more inclusive policies for better sustainability outcomes.

The diversity of gender capacities can be enhanced if women are not only perceived as beneficiaries of sustainability but also as major actors in developing innovative solutions to sustainability challenges. The areas of synergy are diverse.

  • Through increased women’s socio-economic empowerment, women can have equal access to resources and better control of resources, so that they can make economic decisions for households and society. For example, economically empowered women can afford better household cooking technologies, which helps to protect their health and the environment. Furthermore, apart from poverty reduction and raising the GDP per capita, economic empowerment will increase the percentage of women investing in renewable energy.

  • The gender gap in leadership can be closed if female representation in governance and corporate leadership increases. Ensuring equality in leadership opportunities synergizes initiatives from diverse perspectives, so that inclusive policies are prioritized. Sustainability policies can be more effective if women are equally represented in policymaking as men. This can produce improved and balanced decision-making, as well as more equitable outcomes that benefit society. Therefore, women need to be encouraged to undertake leadership roles.

  • Increased training skills in sustainability sectors related to sustainability. The diverse creativity and problem-solving skills of both genders can complement each other for speed and holistic solutions.

  • Educating women can help them to understand their rights and make informed decisions about the sustainability plans, climate change and the need to take action, and environmental safety habits. Education helps women to influence society in natural resource management and conservation

Therefore, sustainability can improve if the full potential of women is harnessed. Solutions can be broader if inclusive, and so women should be key agents of sustainability.
