The calculation method, which was invented by the Italian statistician sociologist Corrado Gini in 1912, remains popular today in income distribution inequality calculations.
According to the calculation made over the frequency distribution of different income groups in a national economy or group, a value between 0 and 1 is obtained. If everyone in the group to which the calculation is applied earns equal income, this coefficient becomes 0, while a coefficient of 1 means that all income is collected by only one person.
According to the Income and Living Conditions Survey announced by TURKSTAT in 2021, Turkey's Gini Coefficient was estimated to be 0.401. This value makes Turkey the 4th country with the highest income inequality among OECD countries.
