2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference started
United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) will take place from 31 October to 12 November in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Paris Climate Agreement's goal of keeping the global temperature below 2 degrees clearly demonstrates the necessity for countries to take decisive and concrete steps. If the carbon emission aren’t reduced rapidly and substantially, it becomes impossible to reach this goal. In the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report (IPCC) published before the conference, the last point reached in climate change is described as “red alert for humanity”. Therefore, COP26 gathered with emphasis on the “reality” of climate change is defined as “the last chance for the world”. The four main goals of COP26; 1.It aims to meet the global net zero commitment and keep the global temperature at 1.5 degrees by the middle of the century. Bold steps such as encouraging renewable energy investments, abandoning the use of coal, limiting deforestation, expanding the use of electric vehicles to reduce the carbon emissions are expected from countries. 2. Ecosystem must be protected and revitalized. In order to prevent loss of life and property, agriculture, infrastructure, defense and warning systems should be developed. 3. Developed countries must meet their financial support commitments in order to achieve the goals. Efforts should be made to meet the financing needs of the private and public sectors for the net zero target. 4. The rules determined by the Paris Climate Agreement should be finalized in order to accelerate the actions fighting the climate crisis. Cooperation between governments, companies and civil society should be strengthened.
