Switzerland is Proceeding E-Commerce and Digitalization Investments
Switzerland invested 4.4 million dollars for UNCTAD's [The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development] e-commerce and digital economy affairs. For this purpose, a new agreement was signed on 13 September.
With the new funds invested, activities that will enable more countries to participate in and benefit from the developing digital economy will be supported. Switzerland's funding, which contributes $4.4 million (4 million Swiss Francs) to UNCTAD's e-commerce and digital economy program, will be provided through the SECO (Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs). This will support the program's technical collaboration, research and consensus building activities until 2024.
Didier Chambovey, Swiss Ambassador to the World Trade Organization, stated that they are proud of Switzerland's contribution to UNCTAD's e-commerce program, which supports the creation of convenient framework conditions for e-commerce in developing and least developed countries. Chambovey added that a robust e-commerce ecosystem is needed to sustain work-flows in trade and alleviate economic and social impacts in times of crisis -as the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrate- especially in the most vulnerable countries.
