Important Partnership for Carbon Storage from Finland and Norway
Finland and Norway have announced a partnership to collaborate on the cross-border transportation and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2), aligning with their commitment to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable energy. This agreement was reached during a virtual meeting between Kai Mykkänen, Finland's Minister of Climate and the Environment, and Terje Aasland, Norway's Minister of Energy. The agreement allows captured CO2 from Finland, particularly from its bioenergy and forest industries, to be transported to Norway for permanent storage under the seabed. Finland lacks suitable geological conditions for long-term storage, making Norway, with over 27 years of experience in safe CO2 storage, an ideal partner. The project presents promising prospects for reducing emissions, but concerns remain regarding the costs and effectiveness of carbon capture and storage technologies. The partnership reflects a broader commitment from both nations to address climate change through sustainable practices and innovative solutions.
