Microsoft Expands Cloud and AI Infrastructure in Sweden with $3.2 Billion Investment

Microsoft has announced a significant investment of 33.7 billion Swedish crowns ($3.2 billion) to expand its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Sweden over a two-year period. The investment aims to meet the growing demand for cloud services, particularly in the context of generative AI, which has led to a surge in demand for advanced chips.

Key points from the investment include:

Cloud Infrastructure Expansion: Microsoft will expand its cloud infrastructure in Sweden, deploying 20,000 advanced graphics processing units at its data centre sites in Sandviken, Gavle, and Staffanstorp.

AI Training: The company plans to train 250,000 Swedes with AI skills within organizations, schools, universities, public sector, and society at large over three years.

Renewable Energy: Microsoft is investing in renewable energy and has procured nearly 1,000 MW of renewable energy in Sweden.

Chip Development: The company will use chips from Nvidia and AMD and may develop its own chips to support the complex applications of generative AI.

Nordic Region Focus: Microsoft is committed to boosting AI adoption across the Nordic region, which includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway.

This significant investment is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to capitalize on the growing demand for cloud computing and AI services, with the potential to contribute nearly $1 trillion to the sector's growth.
