Rapid Growth of Electric Vehicle Charging Points in the UK

As of June 2024, there are nearly 1 million electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the UK. The majority of these points are located in private residences and businesses, with approximately 65,000 publicly accessible chargers available. These charging points range from ultra-rapid chargers at motorway service stations to slower options installed on street lamp posts.

During the spring quarter, a new public charging point was installed approximately every 25 minutes, underscoring the industry's efforts to keep pace with the increasing sales of electric vehicles. However, concerns persist regarding grid capacity and the need for streamlined approval processes for additional charging infrastructure.

Industry optimism surrounds the target set by the previous government to achieve 300,000 public charging points by 2030. Yet, challenges such as grid connections and regulatory approvals could potentially hinder progress without government intervention.

Key players in the market include Shell Recharge, Pod Point, and Connected Kerb, highlighting a competitive landscape in the EV charging sector. Overall, expanding the charging infrastructure is deemed crucial for fostering a robust electric vehicle market and achieving environmental goals.
