European Union decided to end airline exemption for cargo in passenger cabin

Aviation agency states the temporary rule change is no longer needed to support global trade

European aviation regulators said on Monday they would not extend a safety exemption that allows airlines to carry critical supplies in the passenger cabin to make up for lost capacity as the pandemic shuts down most commercial flights.

“The logistical challenges that have arisen in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 crisis are no longer present to the same extent,” the European Union Aviation Safety Agency said in a statement. Cabin cargo permit expires on 31 July.
