Contrails are white streaks formed when water vapor from aircraft engine exhausts freezes and can cause heat to be trapped in the atmosphere. These streaks are a significant part of the impact of flying on global warming.
Google's researchers developed the AI system using satellite imagery, weather and flight data. This data was used to create routes to help pilots follow routes that do not create contrails.
About 70 test flights were conducted and it was observed that using the routes created by artificial intelligence reduced the amount of contrails by 54 percent. This was described as evidence that commercial flights can avoid contrails and thus reduce climate impacts.
Google said it plans to collaborate with the aviation industry to support efforts to avoid contrails in the future. However, it is worth noting that airlines have not yet been penalized for global warming impacts and therefore have no incentive to favor routes that avoid contrails.
