Security Update and Operating System Update Obligation
The European Union, with its new proposal, has brought obligations to electronic device manufacturers ranging from software updates to the health of batteries.
Continuing its sustainability initiatives, the European Union, which made the Type-C input standard, this time recommended that electronic device manufacturers be required to provide at least five years of security updates and three years of operating system updates.
With this new proposal, apart from the update conditions, it also proposed the minimum spare part requirement for smartphones and tablets sold within the territory of the European Union. Thus, manufacturers will be obliged to provide spare batteries, screens, cameras, charging ports, mechanical keys, microphones and speakers for their devices for at least five years, as well as providing a detailed repair guide for all parts for 7 years.
The regulation is expected to enter into force within 12 months of ratification.
