 Earthquake and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder


Like other traumatic natural disasters, earthquake may be associated with some psychiatric disorders. These include acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.


Earthquake and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
There is fear and horror at the time of an earthquake, and it is not possible for the person to focus on anything else. Among the most common reactions during an earthquake are; It can be seen as a feeling of unreality, alienation, and unresponsiveness. After the earthquake, the person may sometimes have difficulty remembering what happened during and after the earthquake, and at the same time, his/her thoughts about the world and himself/herself may be affected. For example, a person's belief that they are safe may turn into a belief that something bad can happen at any moment. 1
Earthquake is a traumatic natural event. Like other traumatic natural disasters, earthquake may be associated with some psychiatric disorders. These include acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. After the earthquake, the person may experience reactions such as dreams about the event, returning to unwanted memories, feeling as if they are experiencing the event again, physiological arousal, avoiding events and situations that remind the earthquake. These experiences may also be accompanied by reactions such as irritability, sleep disturbance, quick startle reaction, and introversion. 1
It is useful to consult a specialist in case of acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder in people who have experienced a natural disaster such as an earthquake. 1
