 What is Earthquake Fear?




The fear of earthquakes, also known as “seismophobia”, is defined as a deep fear of the safety of oneself and loved ones due to possible earthquake risk. 1
Common symptoms after an earthquake may be: 2
• The state of being alert as if an earthquake will happen again at any moment.
• Worrying about the life of ourselves and our loved ones
• Restlessness
• Difficulty focusing on daily routines
• Changes in sleep and appetite
• Avoiding reminders of the earthquake
• Feeling as if reliving the earthquake during the day, visualizing the experiences of the earthquake in the mind of the witnesses, or having nightmares about the event.
What is the Treatment for Fear of Earthquakes?
The main purpose of the treatment of earthquake fear is to gain the ability to cope with the fear of earthquakes. The treatment or therapy to be administered by the specialist differs according to the degree of trauma experienced by the person, whether the person has experienced the earthquake directly or not, and whether there are other psychological disorders. 1
