Within the scope of the RTS262 coded Interpersonal Communication course in the 4th semester curriculum of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, an event titled “Social Communication and Documentary Cinema” was organized.

Associate Professor Özlem Arda, a faculty member of the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema at Istanbul University Faculty of Communication, who was the guest of the event and who has academic studies on documentary cinema, gave information about the history of documentary and the social communication of documentary. In her presentation, Özlem Arda talked about the basic dynamics of the documentary cinema concept, the change it has undergone and its structure that can evolve in the future. Özlem Arda said that the documentary brought together and integrated the documentation required by science, aesthetics required by art, and the fictional elements required by the film.

Özlem Arda also emphasized the distinction between documentary and fiction film in her presentation. Özlem Arda said that there are documentaries and viewers in the industry who adopt the view that “documentary filmmaker cannot be objective”. Özlem Arda said that the directors describe the truth by adding their personal comments to their documentaries. Exemplifying the evolution of the documentary in the history of cinema with the words of director Paul Rotha, "Every trend in cinema reflects the social and political structure of the period", Arda stated that the documentary is a genre that reflects this phrase most directly.

At the end of the event, Arda advised students to make a documentary before they graduate. The activity ended with answering the questions from the students.
