The Semiotic Reading of Popular Culture Discussed at IGU

An event titled “The Semiotics of Popular Culture: Student Presentations and Analyses,” organized by the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema within the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences at Istanbul Gelişim University, was held on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

Organized as part of the RTS 476 Semiotics course, the event took place between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at J Block 393 Pocket Cinema. During the event, students presented their analyses of popular culture products using semiotic methods and shared their work with the participants. The presentations, based on examples selected from cinema, television, music, and visual culture, provided a foundation for in-depth discussions on the meaning-making processes of popular culture.

Coordinated by Dr. Güler Canbulat, the course instructor, the event offered students the opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical analysis. The presentations attracted considerable interest for their integration of academic approaches with contemporary cultural readings.

Students who contributed to the event included Alihan Sucu, Ferhat Aras, Alp Eren Çulha, Hatice Aydın, Melda Şahin, Mükremin Yıldız, Ömer Faruk Elban, Sude Akın, Mert Cemek, Abdullah Yaşar, Duru Çelik, Kerem Yıldırım, Mustafa Hakkı Kaya, Tuana Pehlivanlar, Helin Yıldız, and Nisa Ekiz.

Open to everyone, the event provided an important platform for students to share their academic work while creating a productive discussion environment on the relationship between semiotics and popular culture.
