Message from Head of Sociology Department
Dear Students,
Briefly, sociology is a science that studies society. Its subject can be expressed as social events occurring in the society, social relations, social institutions, social groups, social structure and change. Accordingly, it is not possible to limit the subject of sociology to the concept of "society", which is only put forward as a product of modernity and has a special meaning. It is also a branch of science that deals with institutions, organizations and structures that have emerged as a result of social relations and actions that have emerged as a result of human collaboration at all times.
Sociology was used as a concept for the first time in 1830 by Auguste Comte and was designed as a positive science in order to identify social problems in the West and to produce solutions. Experiencing the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and at the beginning of the 20th century when the answer to the question; "How can Turkey survive?" was sought, especially under the leadership of Ziya Gökalp, sociology was adopted in our country in a short time and became a science used in determining social problems and solutions. Sociology gained a corporate identity in Turkey in many areas, particularly in education and publication activities and it is not only limited to the academic community, but has become an area of interest especially for politicians and the media. For example, on the economic problems such as poverty, unemployment, income distribution, identity discussions on religion and ethnicity, from security issues such as migration, terrorism and violence, to many issues with national and international ideological dimensions such as globalization and information society referring to sociology shows this. In summary, it can be said that sociology has become an increasingly well-understood and valued science for the detection and solution of problems arising from human coexistence and human relations.
Remember that the way to learn to analyze the world and the age you live in, by looking at the past and the future from where you stand today is to know the sociology. Know that many of the social, economic, political and cultural problems faced today have a dimension that needs to be handled and analyzed from a sociological perspective. In this regard, studying sociology is a chance for you, an important opportunity to become a sociologist. To be a sociologist is not only to examine the society from the outside, but also to live in the society, to partner with its problems and to find solutions. In other words, being a sociologist means not only establishing a subject-object relationship with society, but also being a subject-subject relationship. You are the future sociologist candidates.
The Department of Sociology is a department with a 4-year undergraduate and graduate (master's) program under the roof of our university. It has a young staff consisting of academicians who are well trained in their field of expertise and have academic career, with national and international experience. Our curriculum prepared in accordance with the internationalization strategy with an interdisciplinary approach complies with the international accreditation criteria. Our students graduate with a diploma valid not only in our country but also abroad. I wish you to graduate as sociologists who read the age we live in well, closely follow the developments and changes, take the slogan of serving our country and all humanity, and do not leave scientific thinking in their academic studies.
