Interview with Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Aydın!

Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Aydın emphasized in the interview conducted in partnership with Istanbul Arel University that sexist expressions embedded in everyday language are often perceived as “normal,” and that this perception reinforces social inequality.

In the interview featuring the insights of Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Aydın, it is emphasized that unnoticed sexist expressions embedded in everyday language contribute to the reproduction of gender inequality. Aydın states that sexist discourse is not limited to explicitly offensive remarks; rather, many expressions used in daily conversations, on social media, and under the guise of humor reinforce a structure that marginalizes and belittles women. She notes that society often perceives these expressions as “natural” or “ordinary,” which prevents individuals from recognizing their problematic aspects. This normalization, she explains, plays a significant role in the widespread use of sexist language.

The interview also highlights that sexist patterns are reproduced even in reactions to incidents of violence against women on digital platforms, revealing that patriarchal attitudes persist even within expressions of anger. According to Aydın, language both reflects and sustains gender inequality, making meaningful social transformation unlikely without a corresponding transformation in language itself. For this reason, she stresses the need to increase individual awareness, strengthen educational content, and encourage more conscientious language practices in the media. Aydın underlines that the growing sensitivity among younger generations is promising, and she emphasizes that transforming societal language is a long-term but achievable process.
