Prof. Gülgün ÇİĞDEM, one of the faculty members of the Department of International Trade and Business, will participate in the 6th International Istanbul Current Scientific Research Congress of to be held on 4-5 February 2025 with her conference paper titled ‘Elderly Poverty in Türkiye: Economic and Social Analysing Dynamics’.
Within the scope of the study, the survey study on the economic and social difficulties faced by the elderly population in Turkey reveals the dimensions of elderly poverty. Under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Gülgün ÇİĞDEM, one of the faculty members of the Department of International Trade and Business, Assist. Prof. Funda KARA,Assist. Prof. Atilla AYDIN and Economics and Finance PhD student Şule EKUKLU, this study examined in depth many problems in a wide range from income levels of elderly individuals to social support mechanisms, health services and perceptions in society.
The findings show that elderly individuals constitute a serious risk group not only in economic terms but also in social and psychological terms. In particular, low income, problems of access to health services and inadequate social support mechanisms directly affect the quality of life of elderly individuals.
This study, which is one of the first on elderly poverty in Turkey, shows that the issue should be addressed as a social priority. Considering elderly individuals not only as ‘support recipients’ but also as individuals who can contribute to society and developing policies in this direction can make ageing a healthier and more dignified process.
