The Panel on Legal, Psychological and Communication Perspectives in Combating Violence Against Women Held with High Participation
With the contributions of our internal stakeholders TCCUAM and the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences’ Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, the panel titled Legal, Psychological and Communication Perspectives in Combating Violence Against Women was held on November 18, 2025, moderated by TCCUAM Director Dr. Selda Tunç Subaşı and TCCUAM Assistant Director Dr. Seyra Kestel.
Our first speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selin Kiraz Demir, provided a detailed account of how representations of violence against women in cinema have transformed from past to present, the points at which conflicts emerged, and how these representations have evolved over time. Drawing from both academic perspectives and sectoral experiences, she critically examined gendered viewpoints within cinema. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selin Kiraz Demir explained, with concrete examples, how these perspectives are reproduced during production processes, and offered strong, research-based solutions on how these patterns can be broken. She emphasized the steps necessary to create more equitable and sensitive representations in cinema.
Our second speaker, Dr. Nur İnci Namlı—Clinical Psychologist—evaluated the phenomenon of violence in relation to her long-standing experience in child and adolescent clinical psychology. She demonstrated with examples that violence is not merely an individual issue but one closely tied to structural and systemic problems within society. She highlighted that these systemic issues span a broad spectrum, from family dynamics and school environments to social policies and gender inequality. She stressed the need for holistic, community-centered solutions that go beyond individual psychological interventions in order to prevent violence.
Our third speaker, Gender Studies Specialist Arda Begüm Bayır, approached the sociological dimensions of violence against women through a multifaceted lens, drawing on her project and thesis studies conducted within the context of women’s rights in law. She explained the strong ties between sociology and law, supporting her points with examples from her field experience and academic research. She emphasized that violence against women is not only a legal issue but also shaped by social norms, cultural assumptions, and power relations. Her presentation, enriched with current data and case studies, was followed with great interest by participants.
Our fourth speaker, Attorney Süreyya Kardelen Yarlı, examined violence against women in detail from a legal perspective. She explained how legal mechanisms can be effectively utilized to empower women and conveyed, in clear and accessible language, the rights that women subjected to violence possess. She emphasized that merely having legal protections is not enough; these protections must be known and supported by all segments of society. She provided a detailed explanation of where a woman exposed to violence should first apply, how these application processes proceed, and the legal steps that may follow. In doing so, she delivered a talk that was both awareness-raising and instructive.
