How Much Has the Emission Rates Resulted from Flight Changed in the Pandemic?

The fact that the aviation sector significantly reduced its activities in 2020 compared to 2019, also affected aviation carbon emission rates.

The aviation sector has been one of the sectors that has been heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic that has affected the whole world. Air traffic was drastically reduced with the suspension of most of the flights. Although the decrease in air traffic adversely affected airlines and passengers, it reduced the damage caused by aircrafts to nature.

According to EUROCONTROL, flights from the European region decreased by 54.5% and carbon dioxide emissions during flight decreased by 56.9% in 2020. The biggest decrease was in Montenegro with 75%, the least decrease was in Luxembourg with 13%. In Turkey, this ratio is 53.8%.

It was stated that the differences in emission rates of countries are due to differences in flight and fleet types and market segments.
