Assoc. Prof. Ebru Gül Yılmaz Commented on the Latest Changes in U.S. Trade Policy on EKOTURK TV

As of July 24, a new era began in U.S. trade policy. The 150-day statutory period of the 10 percent general tariff, in effect since February under Section 122 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974, expired and was replaced by a new country-based tariff regime established under Section 301 of the same act.

Addressing the potential implications of this regulation for global trade during the live broadcast, Yılmaz provided detailed information on the legal basis of the new tariff policy and the tax practices that vary by country. She stated that Section 301 grants the United States the authority to impose targeted customs tariffs against trade practices found to be "unfair, unreasonable, or discriminatory."

As a result of the United States' review covering approximately 60 trading partners, countries were classified into three separate tariff groups. Accordingly, some countries will be subject to an additional customs duty of 10 percent, while a broad group of countries, including Türkiye, will face an additional tariff of 12.5 percent. Yılmaz underlined that the new regime is a development that should be closely monitored with regard to global trade balances, supply chains, and Türkiye–U.S. trade relations.
