Author Füruzan Closes Her Eyes to Life

Füruzan, one of the important figures of contemporary Turkish literature, passed away at the age of 89.

Füruzan, a well-known author of Turkish literature, particularly remembered for her work "Parasız Yatılı" (Boarding Without Charge), bid farewell to life on February 11, 2024. The news of the famous writer's death was announced by poet Elif Sofya via her Twitter (X) account, stating, "Füruzan has gone to eternity."

Who is Füruzan?
Her real name is Feruze Selçuk. She was born on October 29, 1935, in Istanbul. She lost her father at the age of four, and her relationship with her mother deeply influenced much of her work. In her early youth, she received education in conservatory, theater, and radio, but could not continue in any of them. Failing to continue her education effectively after primary school, Füruzan accumulated her intellectual wealth through individual efforts. Many of her works have been adapted into films. She won the Sait Faik Story Award in 1972 with her first book, Parasız Yatılı. Füruzan was awarded the Story Honor Prize by the Ankara Writers Association in 2006 and the Story Honor Prize by the Antalya Writers Association in 2007. In 2008, she was the guest of honor at the 27th Istanbul Book Fair. While Füruzan contributed to Turkish literature in various genres, she primarily gained fame through her short stories. She published six story collections: "Parasız Yatılı" (1971), "Kuşatma" (1972), "Benim Sinemalarım" (1973), "Gül Mevsimidir" (1973), "Gecenin Öteki Yüzü" (1982), and "Sevda Dolu Bir Yaz" (1999). She also published two novels: "Kırk Yedi’liler" (1974) and "Berlin’in Nar Çiçeği" (1988). "Lodoslar Kenti" (1991) is Füruzan's only work in the genre of poetry.
