UN rights office warns of risk of further attacks on displaced camps in DR Congo
The UN human rights office (OHCHR) stated on Tuesday that authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) must provide civil protection following the recent deadly raids on camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Spokesperson Liz Throssell told reporters in Geneva that there is an important risk that other internally displaced persons (IDPs) areas could be attacked following the last week's deadly attacks. Throssell said the OHCHR is increasingly concerned about the repeated deadly incidents of ethnically motivated attacks on camps in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The most recent incident occurred last week when an armed group called "Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) ", a contingent of various Lendu militias, killed 62 people in the Plaine Savo area in Ituri province.
